A little help...
Right to the point.
I think I want to play a caster, and to be perfectly honest;
I haven’t a clue as to how to proceed. I’m a melee specialist. From Isen to
Grahnet and Targon, to currently Trayjan, and all the re-rolls in between, the
finger I use to right click attack is by now significantly bigger than the
others…But let’s be honest, tanks, as fun as they can be, can be awfully one
dimensional, and the whole routine can and often does, degenerate in to button
mashing for its own sake. Which isn’t meant to offend any others who like to
step into the middle of a mob and haul off on the baddies as much as I do, it
is simply meant to state that sometimes things can get a little stale, and
perhaps broadening one’s horizons a little isn’t a bad thing.
Ezzie once told me that the attraction to playing a tank is
that in the early stages of the game there is a trend towards the notion that
from levels 1 thru 6 or 7, your ability to deal damage and relatively high hit
point count lends itself well to his high survivability and overall
enjoyability of the game. This is probably a highly debatable point, and not
one I care to get into here, but it’s a point well made nevertheless….
especially from the point of view of a newcomer. By contrast, Ezzie pointed out
that it is during the latter stages of the game where the caster shines…. say
levels 10 thru 16. Anyone who has ever watched Bedunk or Glassya, and in my
experience recently, Hyrin, wade their way thru an Orchard or Vale loot run,
knows exactly what Ezzie is getting at…further, while we rarely ever go into a
high level quest without a Cleric, we absolutely NEVER go without a Sorc or
Wizzy. Once again, purists might debate this last point, but that’s not really
why I’m getting this all down.
If anyone’s of a mind, I would appreciate a discussion on
the common sense ways to build a respectable caster…note that I used the words
common sense here…The last thing I want to do is start an all out war of words
regarding the best way to do this or that. How we do something is far less
important than why we do it, and in this case, the why is simply to have a bit
of fun. So if anyone has some advice,
ideas or notions, I well appreciate the effort!

Re: A little help...
Thats alot to talk for one question! I dont think its a good idea to throw arguments around on a forum and then try and take those topics off the table. Ive not the energy to stir the pot today cause im hung over however.
To make it simple go sorc for extra damage and sp aka "the nuker". Go wizard for spell diversity and better skill points. The wizard is by far more multi class friendly. To make up for the sorcs lack in spells buy scrolls and wands. Put points in umd for sorc too its useful to have and pairs nicely with your high CHA.
I think you have taken a good route here by running a tank first. Now you have cash to twink your caster and help him out with an allowance. Of course you may be using this character for a static group and casters are fine for that too. Dont expect to be buying alot of scrolls static play may influnence your spell selsctions. Have fun!

Building A Sorceror
OK, so there are so many ways you can build a caster. I am pretty good with sorcerors, but this is a guide and in no way should it be seen as the "best" way or the "only" way. One of the attractors of DDO to me is the diversity of characters.
Some things to think about.
DC of a spell is related to the main STAT of your character. CHA for sorcs, INTEL for WIZ's. You want to be as high as possible in this STAT if you think your casting style will rely on using any spells with saving throws (crowd control). Chances are, you will have and want spells such as Finger Of Death, Flesh To Stone and Hold Monster to hit regularly.
Step 1. Max out Charisma or Intelligence depending on your caster.
Dexterity is a dump stat. Do NOT put any points in DEX. You will not be fighting with a ranged weapon, and the points to AC are negligible. What's the difference between a 13 AC and a 20 AC
Constitution on the other hand is very important. You don't have many HP as a caster anyway, so every 2 con points is 20 HP in endgame.
Step 2. Max out Constitution
You should have some STAT points left over. If you went Wizard, I would not put any points in Charisma, but if you went Sorceror, you may want a couple of points in intelligence for the skill points. I would recommend this if you are going UMD. A 12 would be sufficient.
Step 3. Decide if you want some intel for skills.
Strength is a dump STAT. What do you need strength for? You may have a limited carrying capacity at first, but STAT items will help.
Everyone can use a will save.
Step 4. If you have any points left over, put them in Wisdom.
Depending on your race, your stats may be quite different. My new sorc Glasya is a human and I maxed out charisma and con. I gave myself a 12 intel and put the rest in wisdom. Sorcs are Feat deprived, so the extra feat helped.
Hope this helps a bit.
