Subterrane Beholder Senate

This is some info on how to run the Beholder Senate chests/red named and the son of Xyzzy.
First, start off like you're running to the hound. When you get through a couple portals and doors, you enter the portal where you're facing regular flensers, a cloaked beholder to your right and the door guarded by ice flensers beyond the beholder. Run passed the beholder and jump at the door and the ice flensers will open it for you without having to kill them. jump through the portal and you're in the first part of Sub East.
This is the first room with two runes to pull down the barrier to the north to continue toward the hound raid. One is an intel rune, the other is a low 14 wis rune. If you're soloing this and have less than 30 hide/move silently you'll have to drop a mind fog and charm any beholder present with mass suggestion.
Obviously, don't bother charming anything else until the beholder is yours because he'll dispell your efforts. usually you can get by with getting about 5-8 flensers charmed as they will take aggro off of you so you can hit the runes.
Once the barrier is down, run up the ramp and ignore all the beholders that follow you. This is usually where the party looks for two runes to bring the second barrier down. Instead, look at the barrier door and go to the room with the mind flayer and the beholder to the left of it. There's a portal: go in.

You're now in relative safety. Buff up with acid pro and resistance, run straight ahead and jump across the acid river. As soon as you climb up onto the opposite shore, turn right and go up the ramp until there is no room to go any farther. Fall down into the acid and swim through the secret tunnel under the walkway you just used. You're now in the Beholder room.



In preparation for the beholders, drop a bunch of cloud kill and acid fog at the threshold where they are gathered as well as all along the floor up to the back wall where you came out of the acid. There are a set of rocks that offer some cover from the rays


Once you are ready, drop a lengthwise firewall in the door amidst the acid fog and cloud kill and hide behind the rocks


If the named beholder is present, you have to do one of two things.
If you have over 300 spell points left, you can run in and out of the room the beholders started in and put a firewall in the doorway until he's dead.
If you're low on sp, draw him to the acid river and die. As long as the regular beholders are dead, there will be a ghost shrine behind the loot piles you can run and use with some stealth and continue your onslaught.



If you still have the stomach for fighting, the portal that comes up leads to two more red named. going in will bring you into immediate combat with a couple of trash mobs. run passed, and go straight till there's a T in the road. left will bring you to a named ice flenser. If you choose to go left, you will have to dispose of the beholders and flensers that followed you. Use the rock for cover. If you want to just see if the son of Xyzzy is up, go right at the T and through the portal.

There's a short corridor with some dogs at the end, sometimes the Son of Xyzzy spawns with a chest. He's quite easy and you can even get autocrits on him with exhaust/enfeeble.

All and all, I'd say that the chests aren't worth the effort but I've only run it about 6 times. If you're up for getting the exp or explorer area completions or just are bored and want a chance at whatever lvl 18 chests can offer, it might be a nice change of pace.
